Addictive Opioids are still number one prescription drugs

This year Times has published the figures. Vicodin is the number one prescription medicine. This medicine is an opioid.

I have heard about Opium from my grand father who was onetime addict and had first hand experience. I know it is a very nice drug, but you have very high chance of getting addicted. Basically people take opium for temporary pain relief and then there pain tolerance goes low and same dose of opium doesn't work and so they have to take more and more and ultimately become addicts. I guess even with a Doctor's prescription you still have the danger of becoming an addict. Should we have a more strict ban on opioid?

For example Times notes "Vicodin is prescribed to treat chronic pain, which affects 20% to 30% of adults and is twice as common in women as in men." If something affects 20% to 30% of adults, should it not be treated with something different than drugs and drugs should be reserved only when there is no other better alternative.

  1. Norco is the brand name of the generic drug hydrocodone and acetaminophen. Other brand names of the same generic drugs include Anexsia, Dolorex Forte, Hycet, Liquicet, Lortab, Lorcet, Vicodin, Maxidone, Xodol, Zydone, Zolvit, Stagesic, Polygesic etc. Hydrocodone is a narcotic agent often used in combination with a less potent drug like acetaminophen or aspirin which acts as an enhancer and increases its efficacy. Norco is used for the treatment of moderate to severe chronic pain. It is a habit forming drug as it contains the narcotic agent hydrocodone. It is a prescription drug falling in the category of Schedule drug under the Controlled Substance Act in US.
