Watch Around

Recently I went around my street in Jaydev Bihar, Bhubaneswar, to search for an electrical adaptor and few books.

To my surprise I found
a. 90% of shops are medicine/labs/medical related.
b. 5% shops are sweet and other food related.
c. 2% shops are retail goods (including retail)

Given this in the back drop of allowing foreign direct investment in retailing,
is it not interesting to observe the following:

1. Convinience shops near the road cause a lot of crowding near the road and cause many accidents.

2. The shops are many and all of them are equally non-competitive. The cost of bad retailing finally goes from customer's pocket.

3. We have not yet taken care of the community care programs, like
     irradicating mosquitoes
     good sanitation facility for all
     good roads
     good public conveyance
     better health care
better standards in food for humans (includes animals on whom we depend)
     better pollution control

4. Because of not taking care of the basics, all the subsequent economic activities are shallow and are not sustainable. For example given the conditions of the roads and the vehicles, the road noise is unberable. Causes sleeping disorders, dust and smoke that causes other aliamnets.

5. Just allowing big businesses will not solve the problem. We should give priority in solving the basic problems listed in 3, rather than just kill the few retailing jobs.Recently I went around my street in Jaydev Bihar, Bhubaneswar, to search for an electrical adaptor and few books.

6. Lot of medicine shops are not sign of good health, rather sign of bad health and sufferings.

7. It will be nice if the basic problem of mosquitoes, water, air and earth are solved. Then many diseases can be wiped and we can concentrate on something better.
